Big-Eyed Contacts Without Rx: A Big No-No!

If you've ever seen the huge doe-like eyes of an anime cartoon character you've seen the look countless teenagers and twenty-somethings are going for with large circle contact lenses. The look became a rage after Lady Gaga was shown with an oversized stare in her music video for the song "Bad Romance."
Circle contacts, which come in a variety of colors ranging from natural brown to bright pink, give the illusion of larger eyes, because the colored part of the lenses cover parts of the whites of your eyes, the sclera. Since these trendy lenses are not sold in the United States, Americans have to fulfill their requests from foreign suppliers via the Internet. Many of these suppliers do not require a professional examination or prescription. This is where the complications begin.
Aside from the fact they could be ordering the wrong prescription strength, many are blindly ordering the wrong size for their eyes. Contact lenses are not one-size-fits-all. Eyes come in many different shapes and sizes, and unless an optometrist fits your contacts, you cannot be sure they the right size and curve for your eyes.
Ill-fitting contact lenses can lead to permanent damage. When you blink, you clear your eyes of cell debris. If tears can't get under your contacts, the waste build-up behind them can't go anywhere. That can lead to abnormal blood vessel growth, and other sight-threatening complications.
Don't risk damaging your vision. You can be fitted for contact lenses during a regular eye exam with your optometrist.
