VSP - A Vision Care Option

The Most common insurance company to cover your eyes is VSP. With more than 50 years of experience, they have partnered with most major health insurance companies in order to offer low-cost, value-added plans. Started in Oakland, CA by a group of optometrists, this was the first prepaid, non-profit vision benefit plan. In the 1970s and 1980s, VSP went national and had over 300 lab facilities nationwide. In 1997 VSP GlobalSM launched Sight for StudentsSM, which is a program that delivers free eye care to low-income students. In 2007 VSP offers its first comprehensive eye care plan to private individuals not able to get eye care coverage through their employer.

Not only do they have the longevity behind their name, but they have been recognized by Fortune Magazine, the URAC (Utilization Review Accreditation Commission) and the NCQA (National Committee for Quality Assurance) which are both healthcare accreditation organizations.

With more than 55 million members nationwide, the stats show that one in six people are enrolled in a VSP plan. VSP has contracts with more than 35,000 clients, more than 100 of them being healthcare insurance plans.

It's fairly easy to find care too. VSP is utilized by more than 26,000 doctors in close to 20,000 offices in areas ranging from large metropolitan areas to some of the most rural locations. The majority of their patients do not have to travel far to find a VSP doctor. In addition, VSP doctors not only provide eye exams, but are a one-stop source for eye care benefits, to include eyewear.

Though there are other plans hoping to compete with VSP, their long experience in the market and their reputation for doing things right makes them a first choice when comparing eye care health plans.
